Hydroxycut Black is a well-known weight loss supplement in North America, but there are some important things to consider before deciding if it’s the right choice for you. Despite its popularity, the supplement has been linked to cases of liver injury, which has led to increased scrutiny from regulatory agencies like the FDA and FTC.

Our review of Hydroxycut Black aims to provide you with a comprehensive evaluation of its effectiveness and safety. We’ll also explore alternative options that may be more affordable and secure. Our goal is to help you make an informed decision about whether Hydroxycut Black is a worthwhile investment for your weight loss journey.

Ingredients of Hydroxycut Black

Let’s start by looking at the ingredients in Hydroxycut Black and their doses per capsule. The recommended dosage is two capsules, twice a day, totaling four capsules per day.

Let’s analyze all these ingredients, and see what issues they have.

Caffeine

Hydroxycut Black relies on caffeine, providing a significant 400 mg per day in the recommended dose. To put it in perspective, that’s equivalent to about 6-7 shots of espresso.

While caffeine can boost exercise performance, more isn’t necessarily better for weight loss. Excessive amounts may lead to negative side effects instead of improved energy.

African mango

Some studies say African mango (Irvingia gabonensis) might help you shed pounds. They found that extracts could cut down body weight, body fat, and waist circumference. But here’s the catch – the research has some issues. The studies are small, of poor quality, and use a specific standardized extract of African mango called IGOB131. Hydroxycut doesn’t contain this standardized extract, so using it is not likely to do much.

Alpha lipoic acid

ALA shows potential for weight loss, especially in individuals with diabetes. However, studies suggest that higher doses (over 1000 mg) have the best effects. The ALA dose in Hydroxycut Black is too low to be impactful, likely providing minimal weight loss benefits.

L-theanine

L-Theanine, an amino acid, may enhance cognitive function and focus under stress. While it doesn’t directly contribute to weight loss, it can aid concentration during workouts. Hydroxycut Black provides a modest but workable dose of L-Theanine.

Cayenne extract

Cayenne extracts contain capsaicin, a spicy compound found in chili peppers like cayenne, chili, and jalapenos. Some animal studies suggest that capsaicin may help with weight loss by reducing appetite, increasing energy expenditure, promoting fat burning, and providing anti-inflammatory effects. However, when it comes to human studies, the results are not clear-cut.

A meta-analysis of small clinical trials indicates that taking oral capsicum, which includes capsaicin and cayenne, does not significantly reduce body weight, body fat, or BMI in people with a BMI of at least 25 kg/m2 compared to a placebo or no treatment. While some trials show small decreases in abdominal fat, the overall findings lack consistency.

Also, the minimal amount of cayenne extract in Hydroxycut Black makes it ineffective as a supplement, rendering it practically useless for weight loss.

White mulberry and chicory

Traditionally used for diabetes and blood sugar control, white mulberry and chicory lack substantial evidence for weight loss. Studies suggest benefits at higher doses, far exceeding the amounts found in Hydroxycut Black.

Hydroxycut Black Side effects and warnings

In terms of safety, Hydroxycut has had a bit of a rocky past. Before 2004, it contained ephedra, which led to reported seizures. This resulted in the FDA banning ephedra in supplements, and Hydroxycut faced multiple lawsuits.

Even after removing ephedra, Hydroxycut was still associated with serious side effects, including liver injury and a fatality. In 2009, the FDA issued a warning, and in 2010, Hydroxycut’s makers were fined $5.5 million by the FTC for false weight loss claims.

Although Hydroxycut shifted its focus to caffeine as the main ingredient, there are still case reports linking it to heart and gut issues, likely due to the high caffeine dose.

If you’re sensitive to caffeine, have cardiovascular issues, anxiety disorders, or use stimulant drugs, it’s essential to consult your doctor before considering Hydroxycut. Avoid taking it in the evening to prevent insomnia, and never exceed the recommended dosage of 2 pills at a time or 4 pills a day. Additionally, it’s not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Is Hydroxycut Black effective?

Hydroxycut Black is essentially designed as an exercise aid, relying heavily on caffeine. While there are additional ingredients aimed at providing support, their doses often fall short. The supplement may enhance exercise intensity and focus, potentially resulting in more calories burned during workouts.

However, if you’re not engaging in serious physical activity, Hydroxycut Black may not offer significant benefits.

Overall review: Hydroxycut Black

Hydroxycut-Black-review-overall-summary-rating
Overall Hydroxycut Black review rating.

Reviewing Hydroxycut Black by effectiveness for weight loss, I’m giving it a C. It basically works as an exercise aid, and taking it without increasing your exercise is not likely going to have much effect on weight whatsoever.

Reviewing Hydroxycut Black by cost, I’m giving it a D. A monthly cost of $74 is pricey, and it can be essentially replicated by getting individual ingredients at a cost many times less.

Reviewing Hydroxycut Black for safety, I’m giving it a D. There are direct case studies of people experiencing serious side effects from taking Hydroxycut, including one death. Also the high caffeine content makes it unsafe for certain people to use.

Overall review, I’m giving Hydroxycut Black a D. I would not recommend it at all.

Top alternatives to Hydroxycut Black

At the core of it all, Hydroxycut Black is basically just a high-dose caffeine pill, with some added L-theanine.

If you’re looking to achieve similar effects, but better than those of Hydroxycut Black, I would combine a quality African mango extract + alpha lipoic acid + L-theanine + caffeine.
