If you’ve placed your hopes on Ozempic or Wegovy for significant weight loss, you might be feeling disappointed if the results don’t meet your expectations. You’ve likely heard about impressive reports of 15% to 20% weight loss from others, leaving you wondering why you’re not seeing similar outcomes.
While both Ozempic and Wegovy are effective for weight loss, there are specific pitfalls that can limit their full potential. So, what factors should you steer clear of to ensure that Ozempic or Wegovy will work best for you?
Let’s explore these crucial considerations to optimize your experience with these weight loss medications.
Common mistakes
Low-fat diets
Many believe that just any diet will do when using weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. However, it’s not that straightforward.
While there’s no specific diet mandated for these medications, research suggests an interesting link between the active ingredient, semaglutide, and a reduced craving for fatty foods. This could be because semaglutide may create an aversion to fats, possibly due to increased nausea or difficulties in digesting them while on the medication.
Studies also show that these medications notably decrease the consumption of savory foods, typically high in fat and salt. This means that traditional low-fat diets might not be as effective, leading to less weight loss.
Interestingly, it seems that following a higher fat diet, like keto or high-protein diets, could be more effective when combined with Ozempic or Wegovy. However, it’s crucial to note that this wasn’t the exact strategy used in Wegovy’s successful studies, where an intensive calories in, calories out (CICO) diet was employed.
Starting Ozempic or Wegovy may bring about a strong aversion to fatty foods, potentially leading to vomiting. To navigate this, it’s advisable to ease into a high-fat diet gradually. Begin with a diet that aligns with your preferences and tolerance level, whether that’s low-fat or low-carb. This allows your stomach to adjust gradually to the medications.
As you progress and reach your maximum dose, especially if you encounter a weight loss plateau or increased appetite, consider transitioning to a moderate- to high-fat diet. This adjustment may help you stay on track toward your weight loss goals.
Sweet foods
The second misstep to steer clear of when taking weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy is indulging in too many sweet foods. Recent studies delving into the impact of different meal types on these medications shed light on the significance of choosing non-sweet over sweet foods.
Researchers found that consistently consuming sweet foods led to a higher calorie intake during meals compared to non-sweet options. Interestingly, the presence of sweet foods might offset the aversion to fatty foods induced by the medications.
It’s crucial to note that these medications may not be as effective at curbing the intake of sweet foods when compared to other flavors. Additionally, sweet treats have the potential to trigger intense cravings, tempting individuals to snack or overeat.
Overindulging in sweet foods, whether they contain artificial sweeteners or stevia, can increase your overall food intake while on Ozempic and Wegovy, potentially reducing the effectiveness of these medications.
If you find yourself grappling with sugar cravings or possess a strong sweet tooth, it’s understandable to feel concerned. However, it’s essential to recognize that sweet cravings are often driven by behavioral patterns and can be effectively addressed through simple behavioral interventions.
Studies indicate that cutting out sweets entirely for around four weeks noticeably diminishes these cravings. Considering that Ozempic and Wegovy also contribute to suppressing sugar cravings, eliminating sweets for this period might not be as challenging as it seems.
For those with sweet cravings, my recommendation is to try eliminating all types of sweet foods in the initial weeks of starting Ozempic or Wegovy. If that feels too daunting, consider starting the elimination process at least a couple of weeks after reaching the highest dose of semaglutide. Subsequently, aim to minimize your consumption of sweet foods as much as possible.
By adopting this approach, you can significantly reduce both your cravings and overall intake of sweet treats, maximizing the effectiveness of these medications for your weight loss journey.
Losing weight too quickly
Another mistake to avoid is the temptation to shed pounds too quickly when using Ozempic and Wegovy. Some users experience such potent appetite suppression that they end up drastically reducing their food intake. While this may lead to rapid weight loss initially, it can bring about several issues.
Firstly, quick weight loss can heighten the risk of temporary hair loss. Although the hair loss is usually temporary, it may take several months for your hair to fully regrow.
Additionally, rapid weight loss can contribute to the development of what’s commonly referred to as “Ozempic face.” This phenomenon involves a reduction of facial fat, particularly in the cheeks and jawline, leading to a sagging or aged appearance.
The main reason behind this is that the facial skin doesn’t have sufficient time to readjust and tighten around the lost fat, resulting in excess and saggy skin that makes wrinkles more noticeable.
The impact of these effects can vary based on individual genetics and skin elasticity. Older individuals, in particular, may experience more “Ozempic face” and struggle to fully regain tightness in their facial skin.
While it might not be possible to entirely eliminate the risk of hair loss or Ozempic face with significant weight loss, you can mitigate these concerns by managing the pace of your weight loss.
I recommend aiming for an average loss of around 0.5% to 1% of your current weight per week, which equates to approximately 1-2 pounds per week for someone weighing 200 pounds.
By sticking to this controlled rate, you can minimize the impact on hair loss and facial appearance, allowing your body and skin to adjust more effectively to your weight loss journey.
Not getting enough nutrition
Another common challenge for individuals using Ozempic and Wegovy is the risk of nutrient deficiencies. Some end up consuming only salads throughout the day, neglecting essential proteins and fats that the body needs even during weight loss efforts.
During extended use of Ozempic or Wegovy, I’ve observed that iron, magnesium, and vitamin B12 deficiencies are particularly common among patients, though there may be others as well. These deficiencies can lead to various health issues, including potential hair loss, and hinder weight loss progress. Patients often feel fatigued, burnt out, and struggle to continue losing weight.
To address this issue, maintaining a well-balanced diet is crucial. Include a variety of protein sources in your meals, such as chicken, fish, nuts, seeds, lentils, and beans. Avoid overly restrictive diets that deprive you of vital nutrients.
While these deficiencies may not show immediate effects, they can gradually impact your health if not addressed. Supplements can also be a helpful option. Taking magnesium and B12 supplements preventively is generally safe, provided you don’t have kidney issues.
For iron supplementation, it’s advisable to check your iron levels first, as excessive intake can lead to serious health problems. If you are iron-deficient, taking a supplement might be more convenient than trying to increase your dietary intake of fatty red meats, especially since Ozempic or Wegovy can cause aversions to these foods.
Not exercising
Another crucial aspect to remember is the significance of incorporating exercise into your weight loss journey with Ozempic or Wegovy.
While these medications can indeed result in substantial weight loss on their own, exercise remains a crucial element of your overall weight loss strategy. There are several reasons why exercise is essential.
Firstly, it helps boost your metabolism by preserving or building lean muscle mass, leading to enhanced long-term weight loss results. Moreover, exercise helps minimize the risk of muscle and bone loss, especially relevant for older individuals using Ozempic or Wegovy.
If you notice your weight loss has hit a plateau, and you’re feeling sluggish and unmotivated, it might be time to introduce exercise to kickstart progress again. I recommend initiating some form of exercise routine once your body has adjusted to the medication and you’re no longer experiencing frequent vomiting or nausea.
Following the lead of research studies, consider starting with approximately 100 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, spread across 4-5 days, and gradually increasing it to 200 minutes per week. This gradual approach can help make exercise a sustainable and beneficial part of your weight loss journey.
Summary
Achieving optimal results with weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy requires a strategic approach and awareness of potential pitfalls. Despite the reported success stories of significant weight loss, disappointment may arise if certain mistakes are made along the way.
By steering clear of common errors, such as neglecting exercise, avoiding nutrient deficiencies, and maintaining a balanced diet, you can enhance the effectiveness of Ozempic and Wegovy in your weight loss journey.
