Maca root extract

Maca, a root vegetable, has a history of use for enhancing fertility in animals and humans. Studies in mice indicate potential for increased litter size with maca extract.

However, human studies lack evidence supporting this, and some suggest it may not improve sperm concentration.

So, while it might benefit animal fertility, its effects on humans remain uncertain. Additionally, there’s no proof it helps with menopausal symptoms or PMS.

Broccoli sprout

Broccoli sprouts, young broccoli plants about 3-4 days old, are rich in glucoraphanin, around 20 times more than mature broccoli. Despite ongoing research into their potential benefits, there’s currently no evidence supporting glucoraphanin or broccoli sprouts for relieving menopausal symptoms or PMS.

Chasteberry extract

Chasteberry, also called Vitex agnus-castus, is a herb commonly used to tackle female hormonal issues, especially PMS. It’s a key ingredient in Hormone Harmony, aimed at easing menopausal symptoms and PMS.

Clinical studies suggest Vitex agnus-castus can slightly improve PMS symptoms and reduce their occurrence. Research also indicates that taking Vitex agnus-castus extract for 8 weeks may help with certain menopausal symptoms like anxiety and hot flashes. However, it doesn’t seem to affect depression or intimacy issues.

Furthermore, studies on menstrual breast pain show that Vitex agnus-castus can moderately reduce discomfort compared to a placebo.

Assessing the adequacy of Chasteberry dosage in Hormone Harmony is tricky due to proprietary blend labeling, but considering it’s effective in small amounts, it likely contains enough.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, an ancient herb from ayurvedic tradition, has been used for ages to tackle stress and anxiety.

Research indicates it can indeed help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and may even aid in better sleep for those struggling with these issues.

Additionally, ashwagandha might have perks for menopause. A small study on perimenopausal women found that taking a specific ashwagandha root extract for 8 weeks resulted in a slight improvement in menopausal symptoms compared to a placebo.

However, it’s important to note that this study used high doses of ashwagandha, around 300 mg twice daily, and a specific extract called KSM-66, which aren’t present in Hormone Harmony. Therefore, while the supplement contains ashwagandha, it may not offer the same benefits.

Wild yam extract

Wild yam is prized for its natural compound called diosgenin, discovered back in 1940. This compound bears a chemical resemblance to hormones like DHEA and is utilized by labs to create these hormones.

Some products label wild yam as “natural DHEA”, but it’s crucial to understand that DHEA can only be made from diosgenin in a lab; our bodies don’t produce it from wild yam or diosgenin. There’s no evidence supporting the notion that taking wild yam or diosgenin supplements boosts DHEA levels in humans.

In fact, research indicates that applying wild yam cream directly to menopausal patients for three months doesn’t alleviate hot flashes and night sweats any better than a placebo.

Fennel seed extract

Small clinical studies suggest that fennel could provide some slight relief from menopausal symptoms. You can find fennel seed extracts in oil or powdered forms. Hormone Harmony uses the powdered form, but it needs larger doses than the oil form to work effectively.

For example, a study with postmenopausal adults showed that it took 2 grams of fennel seed powder daily for 8 weeks to see improvements in menopausal symptoms compared to a placebo. However, the amount of fennel seed powder in Hormone Harmony falls short of what’s needed for effectiveness.

Berberine and Gymnema

Berberine and Gymnema are herbs often used to help regulate sugar and fat levels in individuals with diabetes and PCOS. However, there’s not enough evidence to support their effectiveness in managing menopausal symptoms. Additionally, the doses required for benefits typically exceed what Hormone Harmony provides.

Rosemary and Chamomile

Rosemary and Chamomile are herbs traditionally used for reducing anxiety, stress, and promoting overall mood. However, they’re commonly used in aromatherapy or as oils or liquid extracts, not in powdered form like in supplements. Moreover, there’s no evidence to suggest that these herbs offer relief for menopausal symptoms or PMS.

American ginseng

There’s no evidence backing the use of American ginseng for managing menopausal symptoms or PMS. While it’s believed to boost energy levels traditionally, its effectiveness even in this aspect is questionable. Preliminary clinical studies suggest that taking American ginseng daily for 4 weeks doesn’t increase workout capacity compared to a placebo.

Rhodiola

Like American ginseng, Rhodiola is traditionally used to enhance alertness and energy levels rather than address menopause symptoms. Evidence supporting Rhodiola’s ability to improve energy is somewhat stronger than that for American ginseng, although it remains mixed overall.

Is Hormone Harmony Effective?

In essence, Hormone Harmony from Happy Mammoth is essentially a chasteberry supplement with potential mood support. However, most other ingredients lack sufficient dosages to offer additional benefits, especially for menopausal symptoms and PMS.

Thus, any positive effects experienced from this supplement for menopause and PMS are likely due to the chasteberry alone.

Combination supplements like Hormone Harmony are mainly helpful for reducing specific PMS symptoms. Research suggests you might need to take it for 2-6 menstrual cycles to see any effects.

It could also aid in certain menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood changes such as irritability or fatigue, but it may not address other symptoms like intimacy issues or weight gain.

There are several other supplements with better research supporting their use in menopause compared to the ingredients in Hormone Harmony.

Rating it for safety, I’m giving it a C. Some ingredients like berberine may cause issues if you are currently on any medications.

Overall rating, I’m giving a C. It might mildly improve some symptoms of PMS or menopause, but I would recommend you just get the individual ingredients instead as it would be cheaper and likely more effective.

    weight 190, height 6’1″. Blood Pressure is almost always around 120/80, my sugar lever under control at 80 to 90. CAN YOU HELP ME? 956-378-5936
    I had a 5 bypass on May 10, 2009 then I had the May 10, 2024 a Catheterization which they say that nothing was able to be done? My Coronary anatomy May 10, 2024:
    1. Left Main 99% occluded, Bifurcated into LAD and circumflex arteries.
    2. LAD 100% occluded proximally
    3. RCA is a dominant coronary. 100% occluded proximally.
    4. Circumflex artery: 99% ostial lesion. Continue distally as a posterolateral branch which is a 2-2.5mm vessel. No OM branch visualized proximally.
    5. SVG to OM2. Has mild diffuse. After the anastomosis there is severe disease and a very small diameter vessel.
    6. SVG to PDA is 100% occluded.
    7. LIMA is widely patented to mid LAD. However, LAD outflow after the anastomosis is a severely diseased and very pruny vessel. Hemodynamics:
