Eggshell membrane is the thin layer that lines the inside of a chicken eggshell. It’s made up of about 90% protein and naturally contains compounds like collagen, elastin, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, and glucosamine—ingredients you’ll often see in joint support and skin health supplements. On paper, that sounds impressive. But what really matters is whether taking an eggshell membrane supplement actually leads to noticeable benefits for your joints or skin.
Osteoarthritis/Joint Pain
When it comes to osteoarthritis and joint pain, the evidence is more encouraging. Research suggests that eggshell membrane may offer modest relief, especially for knee osteoarthritis. In some clinical studies, people taking around 500 mg daily experienced small improvements in joint pain and physical function compared to a placebo.
Interestingly, the benefits seem to depend on the dose. Higher amounts—typically 500 mg per day or more—are more likely to produce results, while lower doses don’t appear to have the same effect. There’s also early evidence that it may help reduce exercise-related joint discomfort, with some people reporting less pain and stiffness after a couple of weeks. So while eggshell membrane can help, the effects are generally mild rather than dramatic.
Egg membrane vs Glucosamine
It’s often compared to glucosamine, another well-known joint supplement. However, glucosamine—particularly in its pharmaceutical-grade sulfate form—has stronger and more consistent evidence behind it. Studies show it can improve joint pain and function, and it may even help slow structural changes in the joints over time. In comparison, eggshell membrane appears more limited, offering smaller, symptom-focused benefits rather than long-term joint support.
Aging Skin
For skin health and anti-aging, the claims around eggshell membrane are much less convincing. While it’s sometimes marketed as a way to reduce wrinkles or improve skin appearance, the research doesn’t strongly support these benefits. One small study using a topical cream suggested slight improvements in wrinkles, but without a placebo group, it’s difficult to know if the results were meaningful. Another study that did include a placebo found no significant improvements in fine lines after 12 weeks of taking eggshell membrane orally. In short, the current evidence doesn’t show a clear benefit for skin hydration or wrinkle reduction.
Egg membrane vs Collagen
Much of the interest in eggshell membrane for skin likely comes from its collagen content. Collagen supplements—especially collagen peptides—are widely used for skin health, and some studies suggest they can improve skin hydration, particularly in older adults. This can make the skin feel more moisturized and less dry. However, when it comes to deeper changes like improving skin elasticity or structure, the evidence is less consistent. The source of collagen also matters. Fish-derived collagen tends to show more reliable benefits, while chicken-based collagen may have smaller effects.
Even then, collagen has its limits. While some improvements in skin hydration can be measured, they don’t always translate into visibly smoother or younger-looking skin for most people. In fact, some studies show that early improvements may fade over time and end up looking similar to placebo results after a few months. That said, collagen peptides may still play a useful role in supporting wound healing or helping the skin recover after damage, such as sun exposure or cosmetic treatments.

Overall, eggshell membrane supplements may be worth considering if you’re looking for mild joint pain relief, particularly for knee osteoarthritis. However, they’re unlikely to outperform more well-researched options like glucosamine sulfate. When it comes to skin health, the evidence simply isn’t strong enough to support meaningful benefits. If your goal is improving skin hydration or appearance, collagen peptides—especially those sourced from fish—are likely a more promising option.
