Akka Liver Detox claims to support liver health using the probiotic Akkermansia muciniphila. But does this ingredient, along with the other compounds in the formula, actually live up to those claims?
Akkermansia and Liver Detox
Akkermansia muciniphila is a type of bacteria that naturally lives in the human digestive tract. In healthy adults, it typically makes up around 3% to 5% of the gut microbiome.
What makes Akkermansia particularly interesting is its ability to break down the mucus that lines our intestines and use it as an energy source. This helps support the normal turnover of the gut’s protective mucus layer and allows Akkermansia to produce compounds that may benefit our health.
For example, Akkermansia can produce short-chain fatty acids, or SCFAs, which play an important role in gut health and may also influence metabolism. There is some interesting evidence that Akkermansia may affect metabolic health, but when it comes specifically to the liver, the evidence is much less direct.
For instance, one study in overweight individuals found that taking an Akkermansia supplement resulted in a small reduction in body weight, along with a small decrease in AST, an enzyme commonly used as a marker of liver health. Another study using yogurt containing Akkermansia also reported modest improvements in weight management and liver enzyme levels.
However, we need to put these findings into perspective. Although these studies suggest that Akkermansia may have some indirect effects on liver-related markers in people who are overweight or obese, we don’t currently have strong evidence showing that Akkermansia can directly treat fatty liver disease or other liver conditions.
In fact, much of the research connecting Akkermansia with liver disease still comes from animal and laboratory studies. So while the gut-liver connection is certainly interesting, the evidence isn’t strong enough to call Akkermansia a proven liver detox ingredient.
Milk Thistle Extract
Milk thistle has a long history of use for liver-related health concerns. Its main active compounds, collectively known as silymarin, have been extensively studied in people with different forms of liver damage.
Despite all the attention and marketing surrounding milk thistle, however, the evidence is not quite as impressive as many supplement companies make it sound.
Some human studies involving conditions such as alcoholic liver disease and viral hepatitis suggest that milk thistle may reduce liver enzymes such as AST and ALT. These enzymes can become elevated when the liver is stressed or damaged.
The problem is that these improvements tend to be relatively small. Other, more rigorous research has also questioned whether lowering liver enzymes with milk thistle actually translates into meaningful long-term health benefits.
The evidence is even less convincing when it comes to fatty liver disease. Some studies have reported modest improvements in liver enzymes, while others have failed to show a meaningful reduction in the amount of fat stored in the liver. This appears to be particularly true in people with more advanced disease involving inflammation and liver damage.
So, while milk thistle may offer some support for liver health and could potentially improve certain markers of liver injury, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it can reverse or treat a liver condition.
Artichoke Extract
Artichoke leaf extract has traditionally been used for liver and gallbladder problems, and unlike some herbal ingredients, there is actually some human research behind its use.
Clinical studies in adults with fatty liver disease suggest that artichoke extract may reduce ALT and AST levels. There is also some evidence that artichoke supplementation could produce a small reduction in body weight in overweight people with liver problems.
That said, the results aren’t consistent across every type of liver condition. For example, in people with chronic hepatitis, artichoke leaf extract did not normalize liver enzyme levels or reduce viral load compared with baseline.
Another important point is that much of the positive research has used specific, standardized artichoke extracts rather than generic artichoke supplements.
Two examples include Hepar-SL, a standardized water-based artichoke leaf extract originally developed in Germany, and Altilix, another standardized extract that is particularly rich in bioflavonoids and chlorogenic acids.
The doses used in these studies also matter. Research has generally used at least 600 milligrams of artichoke extract per day, which is more than twice the amount of artichoke provided by Akka Liver Detox. So even if artichoke itself has some potential, the amount you’re getting from this particular formula may not match the doses used in the clinical research.
Quercetin Dihydrate
Quercetin is a flavonoid naturally found in foods such as berries, tea, and red wine. It has attracted attention for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and there is some evidence that it may help reduce liver-related markers such as ALT, AST, and GGT in people with fatty liver disease.
However, the overall evidence is still limited. More importantly, we don’t have strong evidence showing that quercetin can actually improve liver function or reverse fatty liver disease.
Once again, dosage is an important consideration. Studies reporting potential benefits have generally used around 500 to 1,000 milligrams of quercetin per day, while Akka Liver Detox provides nowhere near these amounts.
Resveratrol
Resveratrol is another plant compound, or polyphenol, most famously associated with red wine. Unfortunately, the clinical research here is much less encouraging.
Most studies in people with fatty liver disease have found that resveratrol does not meaningfully improve liver health. It also doesn’t appear to consistently improve most measures of metabolic or physical health in these patients.
So although resveratrol sounds impressive on an ingredient label, the current human evidence doesn’t provide much support for using it as an effective liver detox ingredient.
Is Akka Liver Detox Effective?
So, is Akka Liver Detox actually effective? The formula does contain several ingredients with at least some evidence for supporting liver health. The bigger problem, however, is the doses.

For several of these ingredients, the amounts found in Akka Liver Detox are substantially lower than the doses used in clinical research. That makes it difficult to assume that the same benefits would occur with this particular supplement.
Akkermansia, which is the main ingredient, is also one of the less well-supported ingredients in the formula when it comes specifically to liver health. So far, studies have shown only small reductions in liver enzymes such as AST and ALT, and these findings have not yet been convincingly demonstrated in people with diagnosed liver disease.
In comparison, milk thistle and artichoke extract have more direct human research behind their potential role in liver health and fatty liver disease, although even these ingredients shouldn’t be viewed as proven treatments.
Overall, Akka Liver Detox contains some interesting ingredients, but the combination of limited evidence and relatively low doses makes it difficult to say that the product itself has been clinically proven to detoxify the liver or meaningfully improve liver disease.
Overall rating

Rating Akka Liver Detox by effectiveness for supporting liver function, I’m giving it a C. It contains a few ingredients with some evidence for supporting liver health, but they are significantly underdosed, and Akkermansia isn’t particularly well supported for this purpose.
Rating it by cost, I’m giving it an D. You’re paying a premium for a formula that could be recreated with more appropriately dosed ingredients for a fraction of the price.
Rating it for safety, I’m giving it a B. The ingredients and relatively low doses used in the formula aren’t particularly concerning for most healthy adults.
Overall rating, I’m giving a C. It isn’t completely useless, and some of its ingredients may offer mild liver support. However, I’d expect any benefits to be small at best. If your goal is genuinely to support liver health, you can build a much simpler, better-dosed, and considerably cheaper supplement stack.
