Bucked Up is a popular pre-workout supplement, but one ingredient clearly dominates the formula: L-citrulline. It makes up a significant portion of the blend and is one of the main reasons people buy this product. But does L-citrulline actually work, and can Bucked Up improve your workouts? Let’s take a closer look at what the research says.

Ingredients of Bucked Up Pre-Workout

L-Citrulline

L-citrulline is a naturally occurring amino acid found in foods such as watermelon. It’s one of the most researched ingredients in pre-workout supplements, particularly for resistance training like weightlifting.

Research suggests that taking L-citrulline before exercise may slightly reduce muscle fatigue and soreness. Some studies also show that it can help you perform a few extra repetitions before your muscles reach exhaustion, which may make your workouts feel a little more productive.

However, those benefits appear to be limited to workout performance itself. Clinical studies have not found that L-citrulline increases lean muscle mass any more than a placebo, so it’s unlikely to directly build bigger muscles or increase strength on its own.

The evidence for endurance exercise is less convincing. One small study found that L-citrulline did not improve running performance, although participants may have been able to exercise slightly longer before becoming exhausted. Another small study reported that cyclists were able to ride at a higher intensity and performed slightly better after taking L-citrulline, but it did not improve recovery afterwards.

Overall, L-citrulline offers modest but real benefits, especially for resistance training. It may help reduce fatigue and allow you to squeeze out a few extra reps, but you shouldn’t expect it to dramatically increase muscle growth or strength. For endurance exercise, the results are mixed and seem to depend on the type of activity.

Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine is an amino acid found naturally in animal-based foods. It’s commonly included in pre-workout supplements because it may improve exercise performance, although its benefits depend on the type of exercise you’re doing.

It works best during high-intensity activities that last longer than about one minute, when fatigue is partly caused by the buildup of acid inside your muscles. By helping buffer that acid, beta-alanine may allow you to maintain a higher level of performance for longer.

Research shows that beta-alanine is most effective when taken consistently for at least four weeks. Daily doses of around 5 to 6 grams have produced the greatest benefits in clinical studies.

In practical terms, beta-alanine is most useful for activities such as bodybuilding, rowing, and middle-distance running or swimming. On the other hand, it’s unlikely to provide much benefit for short, explosive efforts like powerlifting or sprinting because those activities usually end before enough acid builds up for beta-alanine to make a meaningful difference.

Caffeine

Caffeine is arguably the most effective ingredient in almost any pre-workout supplement, and Bucked Up is no exception. It has consistently been shown to improve exercise performance, increase alertness, and reduce feelings of fatigue.

One scoop of Bucked Up contains roughly the same amount of caffeine as two cups of coffee, providing a noticeable energy boost before training.

The FDA recommends that healthy adults consume no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day. Since two scoops of Bucked Up already reach that limit, you should be cautious about combining it with energy drinks, coffee, or other high-caffeine supplements.

Alpha-GPC

Alpha-GPC is often promoted as a brain-boosting ingredient that’s supposed to improve focus and mental performance during workouts.

Some clinical studies have found that Alpha-GPC may improve cognitive function in people with Alzheimer’s disease. However, those studies typically used doses of around 1,200 mg per day for up to six months, which is far higher than the amount found in Bucked Up.

More importantly, there is currently no strong clinical evidence that Alpha-GPC provides meaningful cognitive benefits for healthy adults without cognitive impairment.

There are also potential safety concerns to consider. Observational studies have reported an association between long-term Alpha-GPC use and an increased risk of stroke. Although these studies do not prove that Alpha-GPC causes strokes, they do suggest that long-term use should be approached with caution.

Taurine

Taurine is an amino acid naturally found in foods such as meat and seafood. While it’s a common ingredient in pre-workout and energy supplements, the evidence that it improves exercise performance is mixed.

Some studies have found no performance benefits at all, even when participants took relatively large doses of around 5 grams per day. Other reviews suggest taurine may provide a small improvement in endurance performance when taken in doses ranging from 1 to 6 grams daily.

Bucked Up contains only 100 mg of taurine, which is a tiny fraction of the amounts used in clinical research. Because of this, it’s very unlikely that the taurine in this formula will have any meaningful effect on your workout performance.

Pink Himalayan Salt

Pink Himalayan salt is often marketed as a way to improve hydration, increase energy, and enhance athletic performance. While it does contain small amounts of minerals, those minerals are present in extremely low quantities.

More importantly, there is currently no good clinical evidence showing that Pink Himalayan salt improves exercise performance, endurance, or hydration in healthy individuals. As a result, it’s unlikely to provide any meaningful performance benefit in a pre-workout supplement like Bucked Up.

Deer Antler Velvet

Deer antler velvet is the soft tissue that covers growing deer antlers before they harden into bone. It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is often marketed as a natural way to boost energy, increase strength, and improve male vitality. However, modern scientific research does not support these claims.

When it comes to exercise performance, the evidence is disappointing. One small clinical study found that taking deer antler velvet for several weeks did not improve squat strength or aerobic fitness compared with a placebo.

The research on sexual health is equally unconvincing. Studies have found that deer antler velvet does not improve libido or sexual desire in healthy men.

Astragalus and Panax Ginseng

Astragalus and Panax ginseng are herbal adaptogens that are frequently promoted as natural energy boosters. Although both have a long history of use in traditional medicine, the scientific evidence showing they improve exercise performance is surprisingly weak.

Studies in healthy athletes have found that taking Panax ginseng either before exercise or daily for up to eight weeks does not improve physical performance. While some research has reported small improvements in measures such as blood lipid levels or energy metabolism during exercise, these changes have not translated into meaningful real-world benefits like faster race times, greater endurance, or less fatigue.

There is some evidence that Panax ginseng may improve physical endurance in people with cardiovascular disease. However, those findings have not been shown to apply to healthy adults.

It’s also important to consider the dose. Clinical studies typically use several hundred milligrams to several grams of these herbs each day. The much smaller amounts included in Bucked Up are unlikely to produce any noticeable benefit.

Rosa Roxburghii

Rosa roxburghii, also known as chestnut rose, is a fruit-bearing plant native to China that is sometimes included in supplements for its antioxidant properties.

However, there is currently no human clinical evidence showing that Rosa roxburghii improves exercise performance, endurance, strength, or workout recovery. Based on the available research, it’s unlikely to contribute any meaningful performance benefits to Bucked Up.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is essential for energy metabolism, red blood cell production, and the normal function of your muscles and nervous system. If you’re deficient in vitamin B12, correcting that deficiency can improve your energy levels and physical performance.

However, if your vitamin B12 levels are already normal, taking extra vitamin B12 is unlikely to give you more energy or make your workouts any better.

Clinical studies have found that supplementing with vitamin B12, even when combined with folic acid for extended periods, does not improve strength or physical performance compared with a placebo in people who are not deficient.

Is Bucked Up an Effective Pre-Workout?

Overall, Bucked Up is a reasonably effective pre-workout supplement, but most of its benefits come from just a few key ingredients.

Caffeine is likely responsible for the biggest improvements in energy, focus, and overall exercise performance. L-citrulline and beta-alanine also have solid scientific evidence behind them, with research suggesting they can help reduce fatigue and improve certain aspects of resistance training performance.

Beyond those three ingredients, however, the formula offers relatively little. Many of the remaining ingredients either lack convincing clinical evidence or are included in amounts that are well below the doses shown to be effective in human studies.

If you’re considering Bucked Up, it’s worth knowing that the product’s effectiveness is driven primarily by its caffeine, L-citrulline, and beta-alanine content. The rest of the formula is unlikely to add much to your workout, despite the marketing claims surrounding many of these ingredients.

Rating it for safety, I’m giving it a C. The caffeine content is relatively high, making it easy to reach the FDA’s recommended daily limit. The formula also includes Alpha-GPC, which has questionable long-term benefits and potential safety concerns.

Overall rating, I’m giving a C. It can improve your workouts, but that’s largely because of three well-researched ingredients. The rest of the formula adds cost without adding much evidence-based benefit, making it difficult to recommend over a simpler, less expensive combination of caffeine, L-citrulline, and beta-alanine.
